Finasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.

Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

Introduction to Finasteride

Finasteride, a medication widely used for treating benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern baldness, is experiencing significant growth in the global market. Here,, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the Finasteride market and provide its key drivers and expectedults for the foreseeable future.

Market Size and Growth Projections

The global Finasteride market is expected to grow from about $2.90 per day to $4.36 per day during the forecast period of 2023 to 2027[1][4].

  • The market is influenced by several factors, including healthcare access, healthcare expenditures, hospital spending, and the rising prevalence of chronic diseases[1].
  • The cost-efficient low-cost generic version, which is widely available, is expected to gain significant traction during this period[1].

Drivers and Trends

Prescription Prescription Drugs

The global awareness about BPH and male pattern baldness is that the number of men seeking treatment for both conditions is growing. This trend is attributed to increased access to prescription drugs like Finasteride and the increasing healthcare expenditures for healthcare practitioners[1][4].

Prescription Drug Utilization

The growing awareness about BPH and male pattern baldness is also a significant driver of the prescription drugs market. The availability of generic versions of prescription drugs can offer growth opportunities but they are typically cost-prohibitive[1].

Online Pharmacies

Online pharmacies are another popular and effective way to obtain prescription drugs. These can often offer lower prices compared to traditional brick-and-mortar stores. This can be beneficial for those who prefer less expensive options[1].

Government Initiatives

To improve market growth, government initiatives like the emission of paracetamol and ibuprofen from their facilities are also key factors. These efforts are expected to help stimulate demand for prescription drugs and increase market share[1].

Key Players

The Finasteride market is significant and growing due to several factors. With the increasing prevalence of BPH and male pattern baldness, there is a growing demand for prescription drugs. The government initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of BPH and male pattern baldness on healthcare practitioners can help stimulate market growth[1].

Pricing and Supply Chain Performance

Pricing can be influenced by several factors, including the production and supply chain. The cost of Finasteride can be prohibitive due to the amount of fees paid by healthcare practitioners.

Government Initiatives and Market Dynamics

To further enhance market growth, the Finasteride market dynamics are key drivers. Government initiatives like the emission of paracetamol and ibuprofen from their facilities, the production and supply of Finasteride by manufacturers, and the introduction of generic versions are expected to help stimulate demand. These efforts are also expected to help increase market share[1].

The FDA has approved two drugs for male pattern baldness:

First, the new hair-loss treatment Propecia (finasteride). It is now available on the U. S. market from October 1. It works by blocking the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on hair follicles. Finasteride will cost around $60 per month, but the average cost will be $30-$40.

The new drug, available for patients with a personal or family history of male pattern hair loss, is a “first-line” treatment for patients who have been prescribed finasteride for hair loss in the past. While finasteride is a widely used hair loss drug and may be available on the market without a prescription, some patients with a personal or family history of male pattern hair loss have not been able to obtain the new drug for themselves.

“As with any first-line treatment, patients should consult with a healthcare provider before starting any new hair loss medication,” said Dr. Elizabeth Kors, the clinical lead for hair loss treatment at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

Dr. Kors is the lead clinical investigator of Propecia, a new hair loss drug that is currently being studied in phase III clinical trials for hair loss. The study involved patients who had been prescribed finasteride for hair loss between 1992 and 1997. The study was funded by Merck and Dr. Kors and was a retrospective review of the medical records of a total of 523 patients over a 14-year period.

Finasteride is not FDA-approved for male pattern hair loss and is not approved for treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Propecia was approved in 1997 by the FDA for hair loss in men with male pattern baldness and was the first hair loss drug to win the drug’s FDA approval. It also is approved to treat hair loss in women who have an enlarged prostate or menopause.

Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor (also known as a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor) and should be used with caution in patients with an enlarged prostate. It should only be used in patients with an enlarged prostate and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Propecia is not approved for use in women. It is used off-label to treat male pattern baldness and may cause a decrease in hair growth. A reduction in hair loss should be an important factor in the decision about prescribing finasteride to patients with a personal or family history of male pattern hair loss.

“Our research has shown that Propecia works by blocking the effects of DHT on hair follicles,” said Dr. Kors, who is a coauthor of the new drug and will also co-senior author of the new study. “This drug will improve the ability to prevent further hair loss. It will also decrease the chance of future hair loss.”

The new study was a retrospective analysis of 523 patients who had been prescribed finasteride in the past. Of these, 709 patients were female and 591 were male. The average age was 59, with 63% having a male factor.

Finasteride was taken once daily for one year. Of the 595 women, 4% had a personal or family history of male pattern hair loss. Of the 1,081 men, 3% had a personal or family history of male pattern hair loss. Of the 1,081 women, 1% had a personal or family history of male pattern hair loss.

The results of the study show that 1 mg of finasteride (the active ingredient in Propecia) was well tolerated in all patients. The most common side effects were decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, and breast tenderness. However, there were no significant differences in the rates of adverse events in women versus men.

The average time from the initial dose to the start of treatment with finasteride was 5.6 months, with 5.6% of patients achieving clinical benefit, compared to 5.6% for men taking the drug. Finasteride is a prescription drug and patients should consult with a healthcare provider if they have questions about its use in men.

“This drug is a first-line treatment for men with male pattern baldness,” said Dr. Kors. “This is the first drug that has been approved by the FDA and we are excited to see that it is available on the market without a prescription.
